Fever and Common Illnesses

As a parent, there’s nothing more stressful than seeing your child unwell. A persistent cough, a rising fever, or a general sense that something isn’t right can cause a great deal of worry. Sometimes, it’s hard to know if your child’s symptoms are a typical part of growing up or a sign they need to see a doctor.

At Just 4 Kids, we understand how tough it can be to know what the best course of action is. That’s why we’re here: to answer all your questions and provide expert pediatric care in a warm and child-friendly environment. Let us help ease your concerns and ensure your little one gets the care they need.

Common Pediatric Illnesses We Treat

Coughs and colds

Most colds are viral and resolve on their own, but ongoing symptoms could signal something more serious, like bronchitis. We’ll assess your child, listen to their lungs, and provide recommendations ranging from at-home care tips to symptom-relieving medications.

Fevers

A fever can be alarming, especially if it’s high, but it’s often the body’s way of fighting infection. We’ll evaluate your child and take their temperature to determine the underlying cause and provide guidance on how to manage the fever. This process often includes medication, hydration, and rest.

Upset stomachs

Nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea can be exhausting for kids and worrying for parents. We’ll look for causes like viruses, food sensitivities, or dehydration and provide solutions to help your child feel better.

Minor skin rashes

We’ll examine your child’s skin to determine whether their rash is allergic or viral and offer soothing medicinal treatments. There are plenty of at-home remedies for rashes we can recommend as well to help with the itching.

Runny or stuffy noses

Nasal congestion is common in kids, but persistent symptoms might indicate sinus infections or allergies. We’ll help clear up the confusion—and your child’s sinuses.

Sore throats (including strep throat)

A sore throat can result from a viral infection or strep. We’ll perform a quick swab test if necessary to help determine the next steps for treatment.

Earaches

Ear infections can cause significant discomfort to your child. We’ll determine whether antibiotics are needed or if other interventions will help resolve the problem.

FAQs About Pediatric Illnesses

Most fevers are harmless and help the body fight infections. However, fevers above 104°F or lasting more than three days should be evaluated by a pediatric specialist.

Ensure they stay hydrated, get plenty of rest, and use over-the-counter medications for pain or fever relief if appropriate (always follow the dosing instructions). While they’re recuperating, let them indulge in the little things that make them happy—whether it’s snuggling with their favorite stuffed animal or watching their go-to television show for the millionth time. Laughter and comfort are great medicine, too!

If your child has a fever, diarrhea, vomiting, or a widespread rash, they’re likely contagious. Once symptoms resolve or they’ve been on antibiotics (if needed) for 24 hours, they’re usually safe to return to school or daycare.

Over-the-counter medicines like acetaminophen or ibuprofen can be safe for most children when used as directed. Avoid giving aspirin, as it can cause serious complications. If your child is prescribed medicine, be sure to follow the instructions carefully and discuss potential side effects or interactions beforehand.

Offer small sips of clear liquids like water or electrolyte solutions. If vomiting persists for more than 24 hours or dehydration signs appear, seek medical care immediately.

If your child has a fever, vomiting, diarrhea, or a contagious condition like strep throat or pink eye, it’s best to keep them home until symptoms improve. It gives them the chance to rest and recover while also protecting their classmates and teachers from getting sick. Plus, staying home ensures they can get the care they need to feel better sooner.
