Allergic Reactions

Children are prone to a variety of allergic reactions. The most common types of allergies include food, drug, and latex and sometimes by simply coming in contact with a substance that causes irritation. While many allergies are mild, there are some allergies that are severe and potentially life-threatening. If your child is showing symptoms that include hives, rashes, swelling, congestion or excessive sneezing, these could be signs of an allergic reaction.

It can be difficult for children — especially young ones — to let you know just what is happening or how they are feeling. If you notice that they are putting their hands in their mouth or playing with their tongue (more than usual), or the way talk or sounds they make have changed, it could be due to an allergic reaction.

An allergic reaction occurs when the immune system overreacts to a harmless substance known as an allergen. This triggers allergy symptoms. Symptoms can range from clogged sinuses to sneezing to anaphylaxis, among others. The main types of allergies are hay fever, food allergies, eczema, medication, and stings.

Mild reactions are easy to find treatment options for. Antihistamines, decongestants and nasal sprays will take care of most of these situations. Usually, a child’s allergies can be taken care of at home. However, if the discomfort seems to be unbearable for your child, bring them down to see us.
