Supporting the mental health of children and adolescents is important to Just 4 Kids. That’s why we offer therapy to treat what has been known as ADD, or Attention Deficit Disorder, and ADHD, or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.
The conditions these disorders create have continued, but ADD has become known as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) Inattentive, and ADHD is now referred to as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) Hyperactive.
These disorders share similarities and have significant differences. Both are neurodevelopmental conditions.
ADHD Inattentive mainly affects attention and focus. This condition may not be as recognized since many associate ADHD with hyperactivity. Genetics, brain structure, exposure to substances before birth, and other prenatal factors may contribute to this condition.
This condition is more outwardly noticeable than ADHD Inattentive and is noted for high energy and impulsiveness. Children and adolescents with ADHD Hyperactive may display the same high-energy traits in multiple areas, such as at school and at home.
There are multiple symptoms of ADHD Inattentive and ADHD Hyperactive among children and adolescents. Following are some ideas of what to look for.
ADHD Inattentive may manifest among children and adolescents in forgetfulness about the completion of homework or other tasks. In school, those with ADHD Inattentive may have difficulty finishing assignments and organizing materials. They may also find it hard to follow multiple steps and manage time.
Symptoms include:
Children and adolescents with ADHD Hyperactive may act impulsively in situations. They may also be seen as socially aggressive, which may be off-putting to peers. In academic settings, those with ADHD Hyperactive may disrupt classroom environments and struggle with following rules and finishing assigned school work.
Symptoms include:
ADHD Inattentive and ADHD Hyperactive may affect children and adolescents in multiple ways.
Issues resulting from these conditions may include:
Criticism of behaviors demonstrated by those with ADHD Inattentive and ADHD Hyperactive may lead to low self-esteem. Feelings of social rejection and shame from feeling different than others may also contribute to low self-esteem.
Those with ADHD Inattentive disorder may face relationship troubles stemming from forgetfulness or inattention. Children and adolescents with ADHD Hyperactive may demonstrate impulsive behaviors that can negatively affect relationships. Swings in emotional status may put others on edge.
ADHD Inattentive can impact educational achievement. Those with this condition may lose focus on school subject matter, miss deadlines, and misplace homework.
Students with ADHD Hyperactive may rush through school work, leading to missed points and lower grades. Getting frustrated quickly may also impact school performance.
Both ADHD Inattentive and ADHD Hyperactive disorders can manifest as some tasks are left unfinished, and other tasks receive hours of focused attention. With both disorders, episodes of hyperfocused attention can lead to other aspects of life being neglected.
Children and adolescents with ADHD Interactive may have intense emotions but also suppress emotions and disply emotional reactions well after an associated event has taken place.
With ADHD Hyperactive, mood swings can occur quickly, intense emotions may display suddenly, and major emotional responses may follow what seem to be minor events.
