Allergic Reactions

At Just 4 Kids, we provide treatment for individuals ages 0-26 experiencing allergic reactions. Reactions can be severe or mild, and in the case of severe reactions, acting fast is crucial. Whether you are a parent looking out for your child or a young adult seeking care, it is important to understand potential causes, symptoms, and the difference between minor and severe reactions.

Reactions in Children

Children commonly develop allergies at an early stage of life. Common triggers for allergic reactions include:

  • Food: The CDC explains that 5.8% of kids experience a food-related allergy. Eggs, nuts, shellfish, and dairy are common allergies, and it is important to pay attention when a child tries a food for the first time.
  • Environment: Nearly 19% of children who live in the U.S. have seasonal allergies. These can occur due to pollen, pet dander, or dust.
  • Medication: Medication reactions can occur, such as in the case of medicines with penicillin or early vaccines. Make sure you discuss the family history of medication allergies with your doctor.
  • Insects: Wasp stings, bee stings, and insect bites can cause allergic reactions in children. These can be severe in some cases and require immediate attention.

Reactions in Young Adults

While some people experience allergies from a young age, others might not get them until later on. Common adult-set allergies include:

  • Food allergies: Allergies to shellfish, tree nuts, or certain fruits can develop in adulthood.

  • Environmental triggers: Mold, pet dander, or seasonal allergies may occur as well.

  • Medications: Certain medications can cause reactions, either from new or increased exposure.

  • Latex Allergies: In adulthood, it is common to develop a sensitivity to latex.

Symptoms of Allergic Reactions

Reactions can range from mild to severe. This is often dependent on both the allergy and the body’s response to it. While some allergic reactions will respond welll to basic treatment, other reactions worsen quickly. Though severe reactions might apepar mild at first, it is important to distinguish when symptoms have become severe.

  • Mild symptoms: Itchy eyes or nose, sneezing more, and itchy rashes are mild symptoms. They are often related to environmental triggers and can be alleviated with antihistamines.
  • Severe symptoms: On the other hand, swelling, tightness in the chest, trouble breathing, wheezing, severe pain in the stomach, hives, vomiting, or anaphylaxis indicate a severe reaction.  Immediate medical attention is required, so you must act quickly.

When to Seek Urgent Care

When severe allergy symptoms are present, do not hesitate to seek treatment, especially when there is swelling in the body or issues with breathing. Reactions can worsen quickly, and acting fast can be life-saving. We suggest having the number of our closest urgent care center ready for emergencies.

Treatment Options at Just 4 Kids Urgent Care

We want to help with reactions of all kinds at Just 4 Kids Urgent Care. We address mild reactions with antihistamines in pill or injection forms. These can offer relief for itchy rashes, eyes, and other symptoms.

In the case of a severe reaction, our team will utilize epinephrine (adrenaline). This prevents anaphylaxis and helps to relax airways.

It is important to us that every patient has a comfortable experience when seeking treatment. We have created a kid-friendly environment so that everyone feels relaxed and at ease while our experts provide care.

Preventing Severe Reactions

To prevent severe reactions, make sure you identify allergies in yourself and/or your child. You can determine food allergies through testing and avoid allergens in the future.

Even though some triggers, such as dust or pollen, are harder to avoid, taking the time to have the right medication handy can help you find quicker relief. Keeping antistimeines and EPI-Pens on hand are great ways to accomplish this.
